Pierre Bonnefille is a French artist, born in 1958 in Saint-Quentin, the Northen part of France. He discovered his interest for materials and their transformation whilst working with wood during his cabinetmaking studies in Lyon.
After joining the ‘Ecole Boulle’ in Paris, where he became a qualified Interior Architect, Pierre undertook theoretical research of colours at the ‘Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs’ in rue d’Ulm, Paris.
Meanwhile, having exhausted the possibilities which wood had to offer, Pierre turned towards the earth with its thousands of opportunities for transformation, such as through mixing, assembling, and coloring. The discovery of a wonderful ochre sand quarry in Burgundy was a defining moment in the life of the young artist. The understanding he gained from the differing qualities of rocks and the emotion of being at one with the earth gave impetus to the years of creativity which followed.
Throughout his travels, Pierre nourishes himself continually with landscapes, encounters with people, nature and life. He takes notes, sketches and fills his sketchbooks with splashes of gouache and watercolors. These form intimate records of his observation of colors and of nature.
From these moments of meditations arise emotions which he feels a need to express, to retranslate to reinvent through his creations. Pierre leads us into the world of an intimate, vibrant and original creation by passing from the contemplative state where everything unfolds internally to the transformative state where everything is presented externally.
An artist, mural designer and colorist, Pierre is an alchemist of colors. His work, alternately mineral, primitive, refined, draws its impetus from the telluric strength of nature.
Sand, barks, rocky fragments and plant skins deeply imprint the works that his skill conjures up. Inspired by the ruggedness and the resistance of the material, the artist involves every necessary support and constantly alters his approach. A culture of life and its link to Mother Nature forms the essence of Pierre’s approach and is a source of infinite inspiration for him.
The colors of his palette are in harmony with the emotions and vibrations of soil, salts, wind and mist.
Attentive to the effect of light on space and the potential it offers, Pierre creates textures which fit the space he intends. His hand marks, punctuates, scratches, emphasizes, works the material and transforms it.
In a tense world which keeps within the norms, a world which regulates and controls, this translator of vibrations restores the infinity and the immensity of life, allowing us the freedom of our imagination and primitive emotions.
Pierre Bonnefille is a member of the Grands Ateliers de France, and was named Maître d’Art in 2010 by the Minister of Culture, Frédéric Mitterrand, Pierre lives and works in his studio in Paris.
